The still functioning railway departs from Chamonix and makes the steep climb up the Aiguilles de Chamonix. This journey takes approximately 20 minutes with excellent views of the valley below. A small cable car allows visitors to descend from the train station onto the Mer de Glace glacier where they can enter the man made ice grotto.
